5 MOWING TIPS FOR A BETTER LAWN!
Before you crank up that mower, we’ve got 5 lawn mowing tips for you that will help you have a fuller, lusher lawn.
Mow ‘High’
– If you want a full, lush lawn it’s important to mow your grass at the proper height. Grass is a plant and plants absorb sunlight through the surface of their leaves. When you cut your grass you reduce that surface area and limit the amount of sunlight each blade of grass can absorb.
The more leaf surface you leave available, the more sunlight your grass can absorb, producing a healthier, stronger root system. A healthier root system enables your grass to absorb more of the moisture from your lawn which means you don’t have to water as often. Healthier roots also mean that your lawn will be better able to combat weeds without the addition of costly herbicides.
The best height for your grass should be no less than 3” or you won’t leave enough surface area on the leaves, and no more than 4 – 4 1/2” tall or your grass will fold over on itself, hold too much moisture and be susceptible to mold.
Change direction –
Each time you mow the lawn it’s best to change direction. This helps keeps coarse grasses under control and provides a more even cut.
Mulching –
Using mulching blades on your mower forces the cut pieces of grass back into your lawn where they then provide extra nutrients, similar to some fertilizers. Grass clippings are composed of 85% water and they decompose quickly. During the decomposition process they release nitrogen and other nutrients which feed your lawn and make it fuller and lusher, naturally.
Mow frequently –
Cutting frequently is just as important as cutting ‘high’. Each time you mow your lawn it puts stress on the grass and the more grass you remove, the more stress you create. Try to maintain the same level of grass height at all times so you cut as little from each blade as possible. Never cut more than 1/3 of the grass blade at a time.
Sharpen your blades –
Keep your mower blades sharp for a cleaner cut. Dull blades tear and rip the grass, which not only harms your grass but it also makes your lawn look ragged.
Remember to always follow the manufacturer’s instructions for operating your mowing equipment. And for a professional looking lawn, consult your local lawn care provider to set up a mowing schedule. The smell of cut grass is even better if someone else is doing the mowing!
